A message from the climate cafe

Thinking about climate change can be overwhelming, both with what may happen in the future and what needs to change for us to avoid it.

Eco-anxiety, climate distress – these terms describe anxiety related to the climate crisis and the looming threat of disaster. It is a totally normal reaction to this and therefore not a mental illness.

Feelings can include things like crippling worry, loss of focus, insomnia, depression, panic attacks, or burnout. Approaching each day logically and positively can help tackle anxiety:

  • Accept yourself, accept your own unavoidable impacts and those of others.
  • Use the 'best friend' test - what would you tell your best friend?
  • Media blackouts – too much bad news, or too much doomscrolling? Take a step away from this information to give your brain time to reset. Step outside into nature or take a walk on the Bench Trail.
  • Take control by taking action! Even the little steps help add up to a larger change.
  • Have hope! Things are and will change for the better!

We find in the Climate Cafe that it is helpful for us all to talk about and share our anxieties about what's happening in the world around us and to know both that we are heard and that it is possible to take action with others to make small but important local changes which do contribute to a greater sense of confidence in the future. Because of this, the Climate Cafe is happy to support the Walkathon and to help in the creation of the bench trail. Meeting others and being outside in nature are, we believe, important human needs. We look forward to continuing to support the Walkathon in its work.
