Information about this bench

This large planter bench was made for the trail by The Reconnection Project, part of the partnership at Recovery at The Friary, Dundee.

A message from Bob Brawn

The current Shop and Post Office can trace its origin as far back as 1841 when it apparently opened its doors as a “provisions merchant.” Over the decades, the business was one of several that operated at Glenshee, Blacklunans, Ballintuim, Kirkmichael and Enochdhu. Indeed, from the late 1870s, all were part of the telegraph line.

Over the course of time and changing populations, now only two remain- here at Bridge of Cally and Kirkmichael.  As what must be one of Scotland’s oldest corner shops, the present owners, Helen and Bob Brawn, have tried to maintain the character of the shop albeit with the necessary modern conveniences of fridges and freezers. And have kept to a simple premise- that service is a tradition not a corporate slogan.

Supporting the Walkathon and the Bench Trail was a pleasure.
