About Strathmore Screen - Blairgowrie Town Hall
Who we are
Strathmore Screen began in 2012 as an experiment by a group of friends who felt that there was a huge need for cinema facilities in East Perthshire - a largely rural area with a few small towns, just a bit too far away from Perth and Dundee to make their attractions easy, or cheap, to access. It turns out, much to our surprise, that setting up a community cinema isn't actually that difficult - you just need a bit of energy, some friends who are willing to work hard, understanding partners and a bit of help from people who know what they're doing.
We screened our first film - The Angels' Share - in January 2013 with projection equipment kindly loaned to us by the British Federation of Film Societies, to an audience of over 80 people.
Later on in 2013 we were approached by Film Mobile Scotland, who have enabled us to bring state-of-the-art digital cinema equipment and recent releases to East Perthshire, once a month. Not bad for an idea that started with a cheesed-off rant in the pub!
We hope that we can bring all of the attractions of a commercial cinema to East Perthshire, but still keep the community spirit and relaxed, living room atmosphere that we imagined at the beginning.
We are a not-for-profit social enterprise, soon to be a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
We are hugely grateful to Growbiz, for their experience and business advice, The British Federation of Film Societies for the loaned equipment and expertise, Perth and Kinross Council's Social Enterprise Development Fund for a start-up grant, and local artist Wendy Mackey for our beautiful logo.
