Organisers have thanked everyone who attended a free showcase event highlighting volunteer-led activities in Blairgowrie and Rattray recently.

The event, which was held on Saturday, June 14, in Blairgowrie Town Hall, was organised by Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust (BRDT) and offered community groups, event organisers and associations in the east Perthshire town an opportunity to showcase the work they are doing.

More than 30 community organisations took part in the event, sharing updates on everything from Girlguiding, the community council, lip-reading and amateur dramatics to environmental and climate action initiatives and sporting and outdoor activities in the area.

BRDT development officer Steve Johnson was pleased with the success of the event. He said: “This was the third time that we have held the Town Event and it was wonderful to see another great turnout from members of the public and local community groups and organisations.

“There was a real buzz in the Town Hall all afternoon and we’ve had lots of positive feedback about the event from those who were there.

“We’d like to thank everyone who came along, it was good to see so many local groups and residents chatting to each other and finding out more about what’s going on in our town.

“We’d also like to thank the Town Hall for the venue, and the SWI for providing fabulous tray bakes and refreshments throughout the afternoon.

“Blairgowrie and Rattray has a fantastic community spirit and we’re both delighted to be able to share just a snapshot of everything that goes on in the town and hugely proud of everyone who works so hard to make our town such a welcoming and enterprising place to live, work and visit.”

Mick Moloney volunteers with Blairgowrie and Rattray Access Network. He said: “The Town Event is a very welcoming and informative event, and there was a great buzz about the Town Hall. If you want to know anything about what’s going on in the town then there’s always someone who will have the answer. There are community groups to cater to all interests and for people from all walks of life.”

And Jean Smith, chair of Blairgowrie and Rattray In Bloom, added: “The Town Event is a great opportunity to showcase our efforts for the town and encourage new people to get involved. Well done to Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust for organising this event, it’s a great model for community engagement.”

SNP local councillor for the Blairgowrie and the Glens ward Tom McEwan was amongst those who visited the event. He said: “It was great to see all the local groups at the Town Event in Blairgowrie Town Hall and hear about all the great community work volunteers are doing, which benefits everyone in Blairgowrie and Rattray.

“We’re so fortunate that there’s a group in the town for all interests so anyone new to the area or who wants to get to know people or who has a bit of spare time, can get involved in something and help make a positive difference locally.”

Conservative local councillor Bob Brawn was also at the event. He commented: “With all the hard work and preparation involved, it was good to see that the Town Event was well supported at the Town Hall, despite the bad weather on the day.

“Blairgowrie and Rattray are very lucky to have so many voluntary groups and this was a chance for them to showcase what they do, and for some, gain more helping hands.

“A thank you to all of them for their work and for the time they devote to make our community a better place to live.”
