Volunteers at Rattray Community Garden are offering a new ‘veg in a bag’ scheme this summer.
The pilot project, which got under way last week, invites local residents to pre-order a bag of vegetables grown at the popular community growing space off Balmoral Road in Blairgowrie.
Amongst the produce included in the veg bags last week were freshly picked cabbage, beetroot, tatties, courgettes and spinach.
The vegetables are picked to order by volunteers at the Garden on a Wednesday morning and delivered to the BaRI Food and Refill Store for collection that afternoon.
Lesley McDonald is the operations officer at Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust (BRDT).
She explained: “The idea behind this initiative is to make our vegetables accessible to more of our community, something that everyone at Rattray Community Garden is committed to doing.
“That is obviously limited by seasonality and the varied supply of veg throughout the year, but when we have produce to share with the community, we do so.
“By working with colleagues at another of BRDT’s core projects, the BaRI Food Project, we are now able to offer this pilot scheme whereby we can let people know what veg we have available each week and people can choose to pre-order a bag that we then pick and supply to them.
“As well as sharing locally grown, organic produce with local residents, which helps to reduce food miles, it also generates a small bit of income for the Garden, which will allow us to continue to develop the space.”
Rattray Community Garden, a Blairgowrie and Rattray Development Trust (BRDT) project, aims to bring people together for the community experience of growing food and flowers within a welcoming space.
The idea is that the Garden supports health and wellbeing and local food growing, helps people to improve their gardening skills, and reduces social isolation.
The veg bags cost £5 and can be pre-ordered by emailing info@rattraycommunitygarden.org.uk or messaging the Rattray Community Garden Facebok page. Orders must be made on the Monday of any given week, and payment is due on collection.
