New Friends of Rattray Community Garden scheme is launched The team behind Rattray Community Garden has launched a new scheme to enable individuals or families to directly support the garden, its projects, campaigns and appeals.
And those who sign up to the Friends of Rattray Community Garden scheme will receive regular updates on developments and what’s going on in the garden, as well as invitations to special events.
The move comes as work on the development of the community-owned facility continues to progress.
The idea behind the garden is to create a welcoming, relaxing area where local groups can meet, supporting their health and wellbeing and reducing social isolation. It will provide a place where people can develop gardening skills and observe wildlife.
It will also help facilitate intergenerational activity and educational sessions, increase biodiversity with careful management and planting, and grow produce that can be sold at subsidised prices in BRDT’s BaRI Food and Refill Store as part of the BaRI Food Project’s ongoing efforts to reduce food costs and encourage the growing of food locally.
Jean Smith is one of the volunteers involved with Rattray Community Garden.
She said: “We’re delighted to announce our new Friends of Rattray Community Garden initiative and have already signed up a number of supporters which is great news and testament to the hard work that our enthusiastic team of volunteers has put into making the garden what it is today – and what it will be in the future.
“We will be at the Town Event in Blairgowrie on Saturday, May 25, so if you would like to find out more about the Friends scheme, the garden and the work that is going on there then please feel free to come along, say hello and have a chat with any of the volunteers.
“Our next event in the garden is a mid-summer open day on Saturday, June 22, from 2pm to 5pm. There will be a plant sale, a produce sale, bric-a-brac table and children’s activities. There will also be an opportunity to plant your own salad and take it home. The open day coincides with the wider bio-blitz in the town and we will be working with Biodiversity Blair on a survey in the garden which people can take part in.
“Alternatively, volunteers meet at the garden on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, and always welcome new faces – we’d love to see you!”
