A message from the Blairgowrie Players

Blairgowrie Players is an amateur dramatics group in Blairgowrie & Rattray. The ‘Players’ have been providing drama in Blairgowrie for over 50 years. The club started in 1946, in its present form. Our ‘Drama Studio’ is the old Hill Church in Kirk Wynd, which was the veryfirst road leading in and out of Blairgowrie. The first church on this site dates from 1201. The present Church building, the third to be built on this site, dates from 1824. The final church service took place in June, 1976. Blairgowrie Players bought the Church in 1979 and it has been our ‘home’ ever since.

There is a vast age range of members, from young children to those who are of an older persuasion. New members are always welcomed. Within drama, people, young and not so young, often find a level of self-confidence they didn’t have before. They learn in a sociable, comfortable, safe and happy way. There is an environment of inclusion, whatever standard you are. Drama builds confidence and develops creativity. Drama improves verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Drama develops empathy and concentration. Probably, and most importantly, drama encourages teamwork and collaboration – a very necessary thing in this day and age! We try to encourage anyone, but in particular the Youth, to communicate with us if they are having any sort of problems or issues. We have a Youth Rep. who they can talk to initially; who would then communicate any issues with the Child Protection Officer on our Committee. They must never feel they are alone; someone is there to help. There is support all around.

We felt strongly that we wanted to take part in the Walkathon in 2021 to support Gavin, Susan and Bethany (who was a member of the Players when she was younger). We are very proud of our Bench, which was decorated by some of our Youth members. It shows the ‘Drama Masks’. The two masks associated with drama represent the traditional generic division between comedy and tragedy.

In a society in which effective communication is vital, the study of drama develops verbal and non- verbal, individual and group communication skills which are skills for living.
